Last Meal in Vegas

Compared to my last visit to Vegas (see posts), I did not eat any fast food at all. Yay for me. But, I would have to say, my last meal in Vegas was quite fattening.

Kate was leaving the trip early so we figured she should eat before she catches her flight and I should eat before I go out. We wanted something small so we stopped by the Cypress Street Marketplace (food court) in Caesar's. We saw lobster chowder previously and was craving for it so she went to order it. I was craving for some fries too so I went to another vendor.

I grabbed a table, waited for Kate and when she got back with her food, I was shocked. We had so much food! I guess Kate was a "little" hungry. hahaah. She ordered the lobster chowder, fried calamari and chicken tenders, which both came with fries (she didn't know her orders came with it). I laughed because I shouldn't have ordered my fries. We had more than enough food, as you can see.

Food was mediocre. Although, the lobster chowder was quite good. It was creamy with chunks of real lobster and definitely nice to have some liquids in contrast to all the fried stuff.

Ahhh. Last meal in Vegas. Funny stuff. :) The best and most memorable would have to be the pickles from Carnegie Deli (see post) and of course, my favorite drink would be from Margaritaville (see post). Although, table service at Blush was quite good...but, that's a different story. ;)

I'm sad to say that Serendipity (one of my favorite dessert spots) wasn't open when I was there. I was dying to go, but they open the second week of April. :( Two weeks shy!

Goodbye Las Vegas. I had fun and you've emptied my wallet.

That's....a lot of Meat.

Holy cow, it was a lot of food.

The previous day, when Kate and I went to Mirage, we saw Carnegie Deli (original location in NY) next to Rhumbar. She mentioned it was featured on Food Network and wanted to give it a try. We were starving by the time we got there.

Carnegie Deli is known for their house-cured meats and house-pickled pickles. I scanned their menu and noticed they were famous for their pastrami and corned beef. Of course, I had to try it!

I ordered the hot pastrami sandwich (not pictured). It was huge. About four inches of thinly sliced meat on rye bread. The meat was full of flavor, juicy and delicious. There was no way I could eat that sandwich without a fork and knife. I wastefully [ I do feel guilty :T ] ate only about 1/4 of it. I should have known since everywhere on the menu said "sharing extra $3." I wasn't thinking and realize it was going to be that enormous!

My friend Genki, on the other hand, went all out and ordered "The Woody Allen (image 1-3)." It was basically, my sandwich on top of a corned beef sandwich - two sandwiches in one! I couldn't believe my own sandwich when it came and now Genki's?! His was beyond gargantua, enough to serve all four of us and more.

One great thing about Carnegie's is they offer free pickles upon seating. I love pickles and they were sooooo good! I want some right now. I would have to say, the best pickles I've ever had. Crisp, tart, crunchy - delicious. Wait a second, I just googled and they serve these pickles at Costco?? Ahhhh, I have to go and get myself a jar. It's that good!

By the time we left Carnegie's, we were certainly not starving. All we wanted to do was go to bed and take a nap. :P

Margaritavilleeeeeee

My only request in Vegas is that we go to Margaritaville. I LOVE their margaritas. I seriously dream about them. They are so darn good. I'm determined to buy the mix one day and make my own!

The boys met with us there and we ordered a round. This time, we didn't order the massive nachos (see post), but we did order the shrimp again. We weren't that hungry, but sitting there makes you want to munch on something.

I got the strawberry margarita and it was as good as I remembered it. A little tart at first - margaritas ARE tart!, but still delicious. Sigh...I want some now!

Mojitos!

Kate and I went to Mirage to get our tickets for the Love show (awesome, btw!) the next day. We saw Rhumbar while walking in and we instantly thought, "mojitos!"

The weather was a little chilly, but we took our $13 mojitos (Vegas is never cheap!) to Rhumbar's outside patio. Mojitos are my favorite drink and this one wasn't bad. At first, it was really strong, but after a crushing the lime a little bit more, it was good.

I really liked the design of Rhumbar - sleek, modern, clean and stark white. It's the perfect spot to have a drink or two outside and relax.

Middle of the Night/Morning Meal

After Pure, my friends and I were hungry and dragged ourselves to the nearest food establishment. I'm not sure what time it was, but I'm glad Vegas never closes!

We ended up at Augustus Cafe in the lobby of Caesar's (we were staying there). The service took forever, but I finally got my order of waffles. I haven't had waffles in such a long time, so this was comforting.

I felt guilty eating so late in the night, but I justified it by having my waffles with fresh, healthy berries. :P

First Meal in Vegas

And now...my Vegas meals from last weekend.

Before I jump in..... Unfortunately, my photos are not the best quality. I get flustered when I'm taking photos in front of people! :P Plus, horrible lighting all the way. :( So please bare with me and my Vegas meals.

On my last Vegas visit, we went to the Wynn (see post) and I wanted to go to Paris' this time, but we ended up at The Bellagio Buffet.

The last time I had Bellagio buffet was on my 21st birthday and it was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. It was definitely the best buffet I've ever had and so memorable.

Fast forward, four years later, Bellagio buffet was only alright. I'm not sure if it was because we went on a Thursday or what. But, it was not as amazing as I remembered. Don't get me wrong, it was good, but it wasn't like "holy cow, this is the bomb!"

The selection IS extensive - everything from sashimi, hand rolls, sushi, roasted chicken, prime rib, pasta, vegetables, lamb chops, fried rice, lasagna, cocktail shrimp, smoked salmon, king crab legs, homemade bread, soup and an endless array of desserts.

My first plate (image 5) had steamed mussels, smoked salmon (my friend loves this), homemade olive bread, mac and cheese, seared chilean sea bass and mushroom ravioli. I was pleasantly surprised by the bread. I've never had olive bread and it had a nice flavor to it. Smoked salmon WAS good, but I need crackers to go with that. Mushroom ravioli was a little heavy and the mac and cheese had a delicious crust.

Along with my first plate, I had a cooked-to-order vol-au-vent (image 5). Vol-au-vent is a fancy word for hors d'oeuvres. I was able to choose my fillings (seafood) with any type of sauce (I chose sun-dried tomatoes) that was in a hollow puff pastry shell. The puff pastry was flaky and good. The filling was savory and abundant with a mix of scallops, shrimp, mussels and crab.

My friend, Kate's plate (image 6) looked more nutritious and had a little bit of everything. She had a slice of prime rib, some bok choy, glazed carrots (delicious!), mushrooms, creamed spinach, asparagus, and a little piece of chicken.

I was already a little too full after the first plate, but I trekked over to the dessert station and had some fruit, lemon meringue (too tart!), creme brulee (so-so), flan and lastly, a super cute, tiny cheesecake.

Phew. That's a lot of food. Needless to say, I was full by the end of the meal. It was time to roll me out.

Full Circle...of Fast Food.

Funny how I mentioned I rarely eat fast food and then I end up posting about five entries on it. This blog is def a good way for me to track what I eat! I can't say I "rarely" eat fast food anymore! ;)

I started my Vegas trip with BK Chicken Sandwich and I'm ending it with a Pizza Hut's Personal Pepperoni Pizza. Hella good I might add. Hahaha.

Pizza Hut is reminiscent of middle school when it was "cool" to buy a personal pizza. Although this one was much thicker than the middle school ones, its extra doughy-ness added to its greatness. Smothered in heart clogging oil? Check. Another layer of greatness.

I felt like such a pig since my bf wasn't even hungry and I was stuffing my face with it. I blame Excalibur's buffet. I didn't eat much! :P

My meals in Vegas were a wide range of things, but by far, my favorite would have to be....that chopped salad from Wolfgang Puck's Bar and Grill. I was so anti Wolfgang in Vegas, but he shut me up, for sure. Least? Obviously, Excalibur's buffet. :X

And drinks...? Margaritaville's margaritas. Need to get that mix! Least favorite drink? Shots of Patron. Ouch.

The Last Meal in Vegas

Well, not exactly last since I did eat in the airport....But last sit down meal. How's that?

And where else? Good ol, Excalibur (where we were staying).

Again, a lot of "don't cares" led us to Excalibur's buffet. Plus, we were running out of time since some of us needed to catch a plane. Or we would have gone to Rio's. But Excalibur it was.

And...very unsatisfying. For only $15 (that should be a sign already...haha), you get the classic, crappy, buffet. I knew it from the beginning but we just didn't have enough time.

I stayed away from almost everything that was cooked, except for the lasagna. :X The selection just didn't look appetizing and it looked as though it's been sitting there all day long.

Funny experience, yes. Great culinary experience, no.

Moving on... :)

Michael Mina's Stripsteak

After much walking around, undecided, a lot of "don't cares," my friends and I ended up at Stripsteak in Mandalay Bay. There was a good selection of "nice" restaurants in the Monte Carlo, but they were either way too pricey or nothing on the menu appealed me. Not as though Stripsteak was cheap, it was still darn right pricey, but the other restaurants were extreme. Seriously, a $50 plate? I'd much rather use that money in a San Franciscan restaurant!

The final deal breaker for Stripsteak was the fact that it was by Michael Mina. I'm a fan of him and have always wanted to try his famous restaurant in SF, but just never had the opportunity to. Hint hint boyfriend. ;)

The interior design was sleek and modern...using different textures, from glass, wood, steel to fabric. Sounds like a mish-mash of textures, but it was cohesive. It worked. Plus, seeing big hunks of meat hanging near the kitchen was hmm..artistic in a weird way.

I couldn't decide if I wanted to order off the main menu or get the prix fixe ($65). I ended up with a filet mignon (how can you go wrong with that, right?) and my boyfriend had the prix fixe which included a salad, slice of prime rib with three sides and dessert.

Instead of bread, they gave us a trio of fries, each seasoned differently, complimented by its own sauce. I don't remember exactly what the flavors of the fries were or the sauces, but I do remember my favorite one - truffle oil fries. Yum. It was light, crispy and delicious. I had read on the menu that there was a side of fries fried in duck fat. I'm thinking the ones we sampled were too. Interesting. Never had fries in duck fat. If so, I def like! There's an extra crispness, airy-ness to the fries. So light weight. I can eat them all day.

None of us ordered an appetizer or wine (boo! :( they had super marked up the wines so it wasnt worth it), but since my bf got the prix fixe, I was lucky enough to snag some of his yummy salad. A piece of lettuce drizzled in advocado dressing with cherry tomatoes, quail eggs and topped with pine nuts and shaved cheese. Simple and delicious. So Michael.

My bf's plate was filled with a big helping of prime rib and three sides (pretty much what everyone else had ordered for sides, he got the leftovers. haha) - peas and carrots, macaroni and cheese in truffle oil and creamed spinach. Pretty good stuff.

Now my filet...I ordered it medium. Why oh why I did that, who knows (I usually order med-well). When it came out, it was charred to perfection but as I got deeper into the cut, it was way too red for me. :( I should have sent it back, but I just continued to eat it. The steak came with a roasted pepper and onion, very rustic.

As I mentioned we split our sides, mac and cheese, creamed spinach and mashed potatoes. The mac and cheese was a little bit too rich for me. After a few bites, I couldn't take it anymore. :P

My brother had ordered a strawberry shortcake. Yummy. It came with these little tequila gelatins...creative! And my boyfriend had these beignets with 18 year old macallan and butterscotch pudding. The beignets were good. Not sure if I really liked the pudding...

Would I go back? No. It was nothing to be wowed at. It was a good meal, but I'd rather spend my money back at a nice SF restaurant. Full meal with wine and be satisfied from top to bottom.

The Buffet @ Wynn

Rewind.... Going back to Vegas and what I ate before I move forward... :P

I don't know if I mentioned this, but the last time I went to Vegas was four years ago, for my 21st birthday. During that trip, I went to the buffet at Bellagio and absolutely died and went to heaven. It was spectacular. Such a huge variety of choices and all so good.

Ever since that trip to the Bellagio buffet, I wanted to try the one at Wynn also called "The Buffet" - titled as one of the best buffets. My friends and I went there the second night for a late dinner (we got there around 9pm I believe). The price was about the same as the one at Bellagio - $40. Not too bad.

There were stations filled with over 50 different types of food. From tomato soup, fresh salad, sushi, steak, prime rib, chicken, pasta station (order your own)...the list goes on in on. It was an international culinary feast. And everything was presented in beautiful presentation.

My first plate was filled with an herb crusted lamb chop, steak, steamed mussels in tomato, sauteed green beans, salmon in creamy sauce, squid salad and some sort of cucumber cake.

The lamb was by far the best out of everything I ate on this plate and at the buffet. I'm usually not a fan of lamb because of its gamey-ness, but I knew the Wynn would do it right. And it did. It was moist and covered with a crispy, flavorful crust. Tender...yum. Slight gamey-ness, but not so much where I couldn't handle it.

Salmon was a little dry, it probably has been sitting there for awhile. Even though, I see the chefs constantly changing and bringing new fresh food to the stations...

Second dish... Chicken Saltimbocca (chicken stuffed with proscuitto, cheese and spinach drenched in a butter cream sauce), veggie sushi, sauteed sweet chicken, pasta, garlic mashed potatoes, kimchi (I was feeling like some pickled veggies... :P), jicama salad and sausage stew.

This round was decent. Nothing stood out. The kimchi definitely needed to be fermented a lot longer. The sausage was a little bit too spicy for me. The mashed potatoes were whipped to the right amount of creaminess....by the time I was half way done with this plate, I knew I had to stop. Need to save room for dessert! :)

Clam Chowder was next. I love clam chowder so I had to have it even though I was pretty full. It wasn't as thick as it normally is, but still really rich, creamy and not watery at all. Really really good. None of that canned stuff.

Lastly, the desserts. I surprisingly didn't pile my plate high. Most likely it was because we were going to a club afterwards and didn't want to exactly stuff myself full and dance......haha. I got a small plate of the classic dessert, creme brulee (love cracking that sugar on top!), banana mousse cake and some fruit for the healthy and fresh side of me. :)

Creme brulee was a disappointment. Oh no! It was way too watery and not condensed at all. It seemed like they did not keep it in the water bath long enough, let alone, COOK it long enough. The sugar topping was still good though, I chose the darkest one of course! :)

Banana Mousse, nothing spectacular. I ended up eating only the mousse part because it was the most flavorful and super creamy.

Fruit. What can go wrong? Mother nature at it's sweetest. :)

The last picture is of my friend, Bruce's. He also got the creme brulee, vanilla? ice cream with toasted coconuts, bread budding and a madeline cookie. Correct me if I'm wrong Bruce! Tell me how your desserts were. ;)

Overall, it wasn't a bad experience, but I definitely without any doubt, enjoyed Bellagio's much much better. I remember bringing plate after plate to my table and enjoying EVERY SINGLE bite. Wynn's buffet had its ups and downs, but Bellagio was always consistent in every dish.
