Tokyo Express

Another entry about Japanese food? :P Yes...read on.

The recent heatwave in SF has caused me to want to eat something light and healthy for lunch.

I went over to Tokyo Express (Spear x Howard) and got a futomaki roll. A futomaki roll is a veggie roll with pickled radish ("takuan" in Japanese), egg, dried tofu skin, spinach, mushroom, carrots and cucumber. It's always my go-to roll when I'm in the mood for something light.

Tokyo Express is convenient and much more affordable than Ozumo's - a block away (although, they're not even the same type of clientel so it's hard to compare). It's a quick and convenient place to eat some decent Japanese food. But, don't get their niku (beef) udon. The beef was wayyyyy too tough and hard to eat. If you dine in, it's extremely quick too, a major factor when you're dining out for lunch.

The recent sampling of Jamba Juice's bottled smoothies has led me to go there and order my favorite, Aloha Pineapple - a sweet whirl of pineapple juice, strawberries, bananas, pineapple sherbet, nonfat plain yogurt and ice (excerpt from Jamba Juice). Aloha Pineapple is actually not THAT healthy. I was looking through their nutrition binder one time and it was one of the drinks that had the most calories. About 470! for a full regular size.

This meal felt light (even though the JJ was super caloried), but definitely satisfying and not super filling on such a warm, beautiful, sunny SF day. And....why am I still eating in the office?

Jamba + Bar Codes

I always look at ad annuals (best ads of the year) and wonder, where was I when THAT commercial aired, when did that campaign happen or is that for real?

It seems like the ads in the annuals are so out there and great, that it wasn't ever true or produced. But, I know I can't say such a thing because there are a bazillion ads that run each year and the ones that get into the annuals are the best of the best. So, it's reasonable that I never get a chance to see a certain campaign live.

A small Japanese agency called, Design Barcode, won a Titanium Lion at the International Advertising Festival in Cannes three years ago. Incorporating a bland item as a bar code with something artistic and graphic was such a great idea! I've never seen something like it and once I saw it, I was waiting for the day Americans to use this simple idea.

Finally, Jamba Juice did it. Jamba Juice recently released a new line of fruit smoothies available to purchase at grocery stores. While on my lunch break, I saw several people passing out samples of the drink on Market Street (this is why it's great to live in a big city. :) There are always companies passing out free samples). I immediately veered my way towards them to get one. As I was looking at the packaging, I instantly fell in love with the bar code.  The bar codes made cute little grass. It made me smile knowing that I've seen this before and finally, someone was doing it.

After work, I was walking the same way and they were still there! Grabbed another one. This time, the lines of the code became a swirl, Jamba's logo. I'm curious to see what other designs they have. I hope more companies use this idea because it's cute and makes something so boring and plain more interesting. :)

Although this isn't exactly related to what I "ate," it's related to food and I thought I'd share. :) Please note, the first two pictures are Design Barcode's winning entries.
